Established in 1924, Banaras Silk Mfg. Co. is one of India's oldest and most respected textile manufacturers, carrying forward a five-generation family legacy in the art of handwoven and handloom fabrics. Founded originally as the Banaras Brocade Museum, the company quickly became synonymous with the finest handwoven silk brocades from the historic city of Varanasi, and once operated a network of 22 retail stores across India's hill stations, weaving with real gold and silver zari for royal and aristocratic households.

Indian silk, and Banaras silk in particular, has been documented and admired by travellers and historians for centuries, carried along the Silk Route, sought after in the courts of Europe and Central Asia, and prized for a lustre and hand-feel that natural mulberry, tussar, eri and muga silks are still known for today.
